A FRESH NEW YEAR

Chewing on the end of her pen, Elle stared down at the sheet of paper, listing her goals for the new year. It was tradition. Something she did at the start of every January. It didn’t take her long to realize that for the most part, the list was the same as last year’s.

Visit her parents more often.

Lose ten pounds.

Be a good aunt to her niece and nephew.

Visit Venice.

This last one was new, simply because she needed to add at least one thing that hadn’t been on the previous year’s list. She might as well dream of Venice, even if it was never likely to happen. Closing her eyes, she tried to imagine drifting through the blue water of the canals on a gondola, lazily dragging her fingertips through the water. Naturally, the love of her life would be at her side, his arm tenderly tucked around her shoulder as he gazed down at her with adoration in his eyes.

Get a grip! Love of her life. Yeah, right. The one serious relationship she’d had had gone down in flames when Peter shot with record speed from a hero to a zero. He was talking marriage, a future for the two of them with the white picket fence and happily ever after, while at the same time, hitting on her best friend.

“What’s up?” Lola, her sister, asked, as she sat down across the kitchen table from Elle. They were at their parents’ home for their traditional New Year’s bean soup. It was supposed to bring good luck into the months ahead. All it did for Elle was produce stomach gas. Still, it was tradition.

“Elle?” Lola asked again, interrupting her thoughts.

“I need to meet someone,” she answered. After breaking up with Peter during her senior year of college, there hadn’t been anyone significant in her life. Elle had no one to blame but herself; she hadn’t exactly been looking or trying.

“I couldn’t agree more,” Lola said, leaning forward and glaring at Elle. “You’ve had one bad experience; it’s long past time for you to get over it.”

“I’ll get right on that . . . as soon as I meet someone decent, someone I can trust.”

Lola was right and Elle knew it. The problem was that she was gun shy. Peter had stomped over her heart, splintering it into a thousand pieces. That kind of betrayal wasn’t easy to forget or overcome. Elle had avoided relationships ever since. Deep down, she knew in order to get involved in a relationship she needed to make herself available. Her sister and two best friends had been telling her for six months to sign up on one of the online dating websites.

“Get off your butt,” Lola insisted, “You know what you need to do.”

Lola’s advice rang in her ears like a New Year’s midnight toll. Time was passing her by!

“Okay, okay,” Elle muttered, tossing aside her pen. “I’ll put my profile up on Match.” Her mind went into a spin cycle as to what she would say about herself.
